Are Job Coaches Useful?

Job Coaches will definitely get you fired up if you are ready to make a change. There are fees associated with career coaches, however. For the best results you should first have a solid idea of your dream job and the industry you are targeting. If you are more unclear about your specific dream job title, then give the coach an idea of what industry you want to break into and that should elicit some interesting results from the coach.

Also, don’t forget about all the free and wonderful options you can take advantage of. City employment centers are awesome and offer comprehensive services for today’s job seeker. The wonderful people there will actually help to proof read your resume, and offer advice on the best strategies for your career search in your geographical area.  Also, it does not cost a dime to talk to a recruiter. Once you connect with a local recruiter, tell them the dream job you want, and ask them straight out, “what do I need to do to be able to qualify?” They will, believe it or not, tell you the truth and have some great insight into the local job market. Also, don’t be afraid of if you don’t have the experience a job posting is requiring. Why not volunteer in the exact job you want and then you suddenly have experience in that exact position. Yes, you are not paid for the work, but in just weeks you could turn that into invaluable experience in the industry. Nothing says you’re passionate more than volunteering! Trust me – it works, as long as you are positive!

Some Good Job Coach Alternatives

• Local College Career Centers - if you did not go to one locally find someone that does. They normally can share the job info with you if you are a buddy.
• City Employment Centers – these are hardly used, but they do have good things to offer if you are resourceful and have a good attitude.
• Staffing Firms – Why pay, when you can get the milk for free? These guys know their stuff and have the “finger-on-the-pulse of local companies that are hiring.”

Places To Stay Away From

• Unspecialized Coaches – that have not worked with, or recruited in the exact industry you want to crack into.
• Paying for Advice you can get for free.
• People With Bad Attitudes In Your Daily Life – stay away from talking to anyone that tells you that cant work in a specific industry. If you want it bad enough, you can do it! Don’t let anyone stop you. Just stay away from the topic of employment with these people in your life.
