Scion Staffing (www.scionstaffing.com) has an urgent need for an Interim Controller to start immediately for one our client partners, a leading community development nonprofit that is based in downtown Oakland (this is a remote position). The Interim Controller will train with the outgoing Controller and remain in the role for approximately 3 months.

Reporting to the Chief Financial Officer (CFO), the Interim Controller will be responsible for oversight of all finance and accounting operations and financial reporting activities. The Interim Controller will be involved in supporting presentations to the board finance and audit committees and will work closely with the senior leadership team. The Interim Controller will lead all day-to-day accounting operations of over 35 residential and commercial budgets totaling more than $27 million and supervise a team of four to five staff members including functional responsibility over the general ledger, accounts payable, accounts receivable, grants administration, development accounting, the Single Audit, and maintenance of an adequate system of accounting records.

The Interim Controller will ensure that the organization has adequate systems, procedures, and internal controls in place to mitigate risk, enhance accuracy of the organization’s reported financial results, and ensure that reported results comply with the US GAAP. Additionally, the Interim Controller will oversee all compliance and post award management for federal grants in compliance with the Single Audit.

The Interim Controller will work closely with department directors, program managers and their staffs, to educate them regarding finance and accounting procedures, and also to explore how the finance function can support program operations. The position is responsible for the timely processing of monthly account reconciliations and preparation of financial and cash flow statements for the organization and affiliated entities. The real estate development and property management accounting will include coordinating real estate project and property management accounting needs in compliance with regulatory and investor requirements.

The Interim Controller must be able to adapt to a continually evolving environment and thrive in an autonomous and deadline-oriented workplace while managing an accounting department of four to five staff members.

Key Duties and Responsibilities:

Finance and Accounting Leadership

· Oversee all accounts, ledgers, and reporting systems ensuring compliance with US GAAP and regulatory requirements.

· Maintain a system for review of financial reporting data to assist in the preparation of financial statements.

· Maintain internal control and safeguards for receipt of revenue, costs, program budgets and actual expenditures. Maintain the Chart of Accounts. Implement and monitor payment authority practices and establish and maintain cash controls.

· Oversee the annual financial and compliance audits, as well as the Single Audit.

· Coordinate the preparation of all supporting information to external auditors for the annual financial and compliance audits as well as Cost Certifications.

· Support the CFO in the analysis of financial data and the presentation of financial reports in an accurate and timely manner; clearly communicate monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements; monitor progress and changes and keep senior leadership abreast of the organization’s financial status; produce and distribute up-to-date and accurate monthly cash flow statements for each department, program, project, and affiliated entities.

· Assist the organization’s leadership team in the annual budgeting and planning process; assist in the administration and review all financial plans and comparison to actual results with a view to identify, explain, and correct variances as appropriate; coordinate the adoption of board approved budgets into YARDI accounting system

· Support the CFO in engaging the board's audit and finance committees around issues and trends regarding financial operating models.

· Manage organizational cash flow forecasting by working in partnership with the senior leadership team; continuously collaborate with the senior leadership team to assess the financial efficacy of program operations and establish finance and administrative systems to support program operations.

· Analyze, allocate costs, and post journal entries to appropriate accounts, departments, programs, projects, and affiliated entities for payroll, bank transfers, and other transactions not recorded by AP or AR Systems; oversee monthly bank reconciliations for the organization and its affiliated entities.

· Participate in strategic planning and attend meetings as needed.

· Provide comptrollership functions in order to ensure finances are managed according to policies and procedures and US generally accepted accounting principles.

· Comply with local, state, and federal government reporting requirements and tax filings. Coordinate and interact with property management staff on quarterly and monthly reporting needs.

· Perform other accounting functions as requested by CFO and/or Executive Director.

· Oversees implementation of financial reporting software (Yardi) module upgrades and technology initiatives.

· Database administrator for Yardi accounting functions.

· Administer the corporate credit cards.

· Maintain good professional relationships with auditors, bankers, lenders, investors, and government entities by responding to their questions and requests.

Grant Management

· Maintain a system of pre- and post-grant award management.

· Maintain financial records for each program, grant and project in a manner that facilitates funder reports and requirements.

· Follow cost allocation principles and maintain current and accurate allocation methodology.

· Provide accurate and timely reporting on the financial activity of individual programs to program managers.

· Oversee all financial, project/program and grants accounting; ensure that expenditures are consistently aligned with grant and program budgets throughout the grant/fund period; collate financial reporting materials for government, corporate, and foundation grants.

Team Leadership

· Leverage strengths of the current finance team members, help to clarify roles and responsibilities and develop and implement training programs in order to maximize and reach optimal individual and organizational goals.

· Provide leadership in strengthening internal communications with staff at all levels throughout the organization; create and promote a positive and supportive work environment.

· Hire and supervise staff holding them accountable and provide professional development.

Required Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

· B.S. in Accounting or similar education. CPA preferred but not required.

· Minimum of 5 years managing an accounting staff.

· Strong knowledge and experience in applying US GAAP, procedures, and internal controls.

· Expertise in the Microsoft Office suite, particularly Excel, Word and Outlook. Significant experience with accounting software, especially YARDI Property Management Accounting or similar programs.

· Nonprofit and/or Foundation experience helpful.

· Accounting and finance experience, ideally beginning in accounting and audit, followed by experience gathering, evaluating, presenting and reporting financial information to executive teams and external stakeholders.

· Prior experience in a complex nonprofit that has multiple business entities and programs.

· Solid experience coordinating audit activities and managing reporting, budget development and analysis, accounts payable and receivable, general ledger, payroll, and accounting for investments.

· Personal qualities of integrity, credibility, and unwavering commitment to the organization’s mission; a proactive, hands-on strategic thinker who will own, in partnership with the CFO, the responsibility for finance.

· A track record in grants management as it relates to compliance and reporting of government, corporate and foundation grants is essential.

· Technology savvy with experience selecting and overseeing software installations and managing relationships with software vendors; advanced knowledge of accounting and reporting software.

· Commitment to recruiting, mentoring, training, and retaining a diverse team; the foresight and ability to delegate accordingly.

· Keen analytic, organization and problem-solving skills which allows for strategic data interpretation versus simple reporting.

· Strong interpersonal and communication skills; experience in effectively communicating key data, including presentations to senior management, board or other outside partners.

· Ability and desire to translate complex financial concepts to individuals at all levels including finance and non-finance managers

Compensation

This role is paying a competitive hourly rate of $60+, depending on experience.
