Purpose of the Role:

The overarching goal of the criminal justice reform portfolio is to ensure that (formerly) incarcerated people meaningfully participate in and lead a self-determined, dignified life in societies that are inclusive and non-discriminatory, moving away from a culture of punishment and retribution. To further this goal, they design programs and grantmaking that support efforts to re-evaluate the purpose and practice of imprisonment, restructure prison regimes and increase their investment in evidence-based rehabilitation and reintegration programs.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Drive the implementation of a portfolio strategy and, in collaboration with regional offices, create innovative global and cross-regional programs to implement the portfolio strategy.

  • Assist regional offices in creating regional programs and advise them on grant-making within the portfolio.

  • Work closely with regional offices to manage review and approval processes regarding concept notes, programs, and grants, and ensure the timely submission of proposals to the Investment Committee.

  • Act as a decision-maker on small grants within the portfolio and program investment expenditures.

  • Monitor and evaluate the portfolio and program impact, sharing results and applying learning for course correction and future programs.

  • Exchange experiences with other portfolio teams and regional offices with the goal of interchanging learning and practices.

  • Lead Porticus-wide initiatives and actively participate in and take collective ownership of initiatives undertaken by members of the Porticus Leadership Team.

  • Develop knowledge and build networks in the portfolio area and disseminate knowledge and experiences to the regional and portfolio teams.

  • Manage, coach, and mentor portfolio team in their learning and encourage team members to take ownership of their professional development.

  • Contribute to an innovative and open learning culture, ensuring that lessons learned are shared throughout the organization.

Key Attributes:

  • Minimum of 10 years of work experience in criminal justice reform, either at the international or national level (government, civil society, academia, litigation).

  • People with diverse backgrounds, including those with lived experience in the criminal justice environment, are encouraged to apply.

  • Work experience in philanthropy is desirable.

  • Significant experience leading multidisciplinary, international, and virtual teams.

  • Master’s Degree or higher in a related field: e.g., law, political science, public health, etc.

  • Excellent research, analysis, and writing skills.

  • Strong ability to condense complex ideas and concepts into easily understandable summaries.

  • Willingness to travel domestically and internationally approximately 25% of the time.

  • Proficiency in understanding, speaking and writing in the English language.
