POSITION OVERVIEW

The Director of Human Resources is a key member of the organization and serves as a partner to all client groups in formulating and implementing HR strategies to enhance organizational effectiveness and compliance. The Director of HR is responsible for enabling a highly motivational and high trust work environment and orchestrates all HR functions and activities such as employment, compensation, benefits, performance management, training, and employee relations. The Director of HR makes strategic and operational contributions that enhance the direction of the agency, advises managers and employees on employment laws, policies and practices, and ensures practices are in compliance with laws and the organization’s positive work culture and currently favored policies and procedures. In addition, the Director of HR provides guidance in the enhancement and improvement of current policies and practices.

POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES

  1. Works in partnership with the Senior Management team and is responsible for efficient, cost-effective and employee-centric administration and management of a highly motivational work environment, analyzing, monitoring and revising salary structure and trends annually, managing the benefits budget and maintaining/enhancing the benefits package.
  2. Maintains and manages confidential personnel records to include benefits, performance management documentation, credentials and personal information. Revises HR forms as necessary.
  3. Orchestrates hiring and exiting employee processes. Responsibilities include managing the recruiting for job vacancies, postings, job announcements, interviewing and hiring processes, leaves of absence, and benefits enrollment.
  4. Works closely with Swords’ DEI Committee to further develop DEI goals and priorities for the organization. The Director of Human Resources will also work directly with the Senior Management team and the DEI Committee to adopt and implement policies and procedures to operationalize the organization’s DEI values.
  5. Collaborates with the DEI Committee to identify, create, and coordinate DEI trainings for all staff and DEI trainings for managers and supervisors.
  6. Leads orientation of new employees to include, use and understanding of employee handbook, explanation of benefits, organizational structure, and other onboarding activities. Incorporates Swords’ commitment to DEI values and commitment as part of the hiring and onboarding process for all new staff.
  7. Manages and coordinates HR activities within strategic plan objectives, Executive Director directives, and Senior Management team initiatives. Manages and assigns HR project work to HR team. Oversight of the selection and management of HR vendors, insurance brokers, temporary staffing, and professional services related to staffing necessary positions for the agency.
  8. Keeps current with state and federal labor requirements to ensure agency practices and policies are compliant. Informs Executive Director and Senior Management team of relevant labor law changes, as necessary.
  9. Designs, implements, and directs multiple projects within delegated responsibilities, setting deadlines and ensuring HR accountability compliance to assigned projects.
  10. Provides training and guidance to all supervisors regarding performance recognition process, corrective action steps, and employee counseling and termination process. Educates supervisors in basic hiring and termination procedures. Counsels staff members similarly.
  11. Works with the Senior Management team and Facilities team to help ensure thorough safety measures are in practice. Responsible for the management of workers’ compensation claims, processing required claim documentation, record keeping and reporting requirements under Cal-OSHA.
  12. Provides vision and leadership to support new staffing and/or funding initiatives from an HR perspective.
  13. Works in partnership with CFO to gather information for various audits including workers compensation and employee personnel files.

QUALIFICATIONS

The ideal candidate for this position is an experienced and resourceful professional who is highly collaborative and passionate about solving the greatest challenges facing our veteran population. This person has deep knowledge of and ability to implement nonprofit human resource systems and strategies with a focus on incorporating and implementing best practices regarding DEI and cultural humility.

  1. Genuine passion for Swords’ mission and previous experience working for a social services organization.
  2. Bachelor's degree in Human Resources or related area and 8+ years’ leadership experience in a progressively responsible position in Human Resources, employee supervision or equivalent combination. Minimum of three (3) years’ experience in administering human resources functions for a nonprofit.
  3. Experience and strong understanding of DEI principles and experience with implementing these principles and values within an organization.
  4. Effective work project experience, including the ability to create a motivational work environment, lead, and set objectives in delegated areas of responsibilities.
  5. Ability to perform multiple duties at an executive level; apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral or diagrammatic form; deal with problems involving several concrete variables in or from standardized situations; gather, collate or classify information according to a prescribed format.
  6. Proficiency to exercise skillful judgment within defined practices and policies.
  7. Demonstrated ability to organize, plan and carry out activities independently to meet specific timelines with proven record of accuracy in completing and reviewing data.
  8. Excellent written and verbal communication and ability to work effectively with and influence senior managers. Ability to be responsive and persuasive at all levels of the organization.
  9. Ability to originate and lead initiatives that contributes to positive employee morale and retention of employees through open communication, encouraging employee recognition and fair-minded employment practices that prioritize the organization’s DEI values.
  10. Manages all aspects of work place interventions and investigations related to equal employment opportunity, workers’ compensation issues, discrimination, or harassment issues by including appropriate internal and/or external individuals, documenting appropriately and resolving issues as quickly as possible with leadership team and outside counsel participation.
  11. Proven ability to operate as a team player and establish and maintain good relationships with people of various ages, educational, ethnic and socioeconomic backgrounds, including embracing the agency’s Cultural Humility initiative.
  12. Proficiency to communicate strategic project goals, objectives, and gain collaboration from senior managers.
  13. Knowledgeable of California Labor Law and general human resources concepts.
  14. Ability to work flexible hours, including some evenings and weekends.
  15. Demonstrated experience in using PC and database applications.
  16. Knowledge of payroll and timekeeping practices and procedures.
  17. Possession of a valid California driver license and a clean DMV record. Willingness to drive personal vehicle, as necessary (compensation for business mileage to be reimbursed at standard IRS rates).

  • Provide verification to legally work in the US
  • Ability to get to off-site locations for job and business related activities
  • Membership in HR professional organizations, or willing to join
