Scion Executive Search (www.scionexecutivesearch.com) has been retained to conduct the search for the Executive Director at The Berkeley Student Cooperative (https://bsc.coop). This individual would need to be located within commuting distance to BSC at 2424 Ridge Road, Berkeley, CA. The Executive Director role requires an on-site presence.  

OVERALL SUMMARY:

The Executive Director reports directly to the Board of Directors and is responsible for ensuring that the Board oversees the long-range strategic, annual, and financial plans of the organization. They promote and maintain effective internal and external relations, including relationships with the BSC's alumni. They oversee staff and assist them in their efforts to educate members to be successful participants in the BSC's governance. They are responsible for ensuring that the BSC fulfills its mission of providing quality, low-cost cooperative housing to students. They provide leadership and support to the membership, the staff, and the Board of Directors, to ensure that all departments and programs of the BSC operate in a collaborative, cost-effective manner consistent with cooperative principles of democratic, participatory decision-making.

ABOUT:

The Berkeley Student Cooperative is a 501c3 nonprofit housing cooperative. The BSC provides affordable housing and board to students at UC Berkeley and other Bay Area colleges and universities.

Presently the BSC has over 1250 student members living at our seventeen houses and three apartment cooperatives around the UC Berkeley campus. Each house is democratically run, and we all contribute our labor to help keep our housing costs affordable.

Founded in 1933, the BSC is the largest student housing cooperative in the United States.

MISSION STATEMENT:

At Berkeley Student Cooperative, our mission is to provide a quality, low-cost, cooperative housing community to university students, thereby providing an educational opportunity for students who might not otherwise be able to afford a university education.

POSITION ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Ensures the development of key strategies and vision related to strategic and long-range planning and provides active leadership to the BSC's student-run Board of Directors, working collaboratively with the Board's executive officers, to implement these policies and plans.
    • Regularly attends Board and Cabinet meetings to perform this role, which are held in the evenings and may be lengthy
    • Occasionally available to attend the Board committee meetings as appropriate for issues being addressed
    • Serves on other time-limited or special purpose committees at the request of the Board
    • Facilitates collaborative and clear communication between Board and staff
  • Supervises the BSC Management Team and other direct reports
  • Ensures the organization’s compliance with employment and labor laws and best practices in the workplace
    • Provides overall leadership to BSC employees
    • Advises the Board of Directors in collective bargaining negotiations.
    • Works with the HR department to ensure that all BSC employees are hired, supervised, disciplined, and terminated in accordance with the Employee Association Contract and the Employee Handbook
  • Oversees long range fiscal planning to ensure the continuity and solvency of the organization
    • Oversees regular financial analysis and the preparation of the annual budget and audit
    • Reports regularly to the Board on the financial health of the organization
    • Reports to the Board on short-term and long-term risks to the BSC and promotes effective risk management
  • Oversees long range physical and capital asset planning
    • Reports regularly to the Board on the condition of the organization‘s real property and recommends plans for investing in the replacement and repair of building systems
    • Collaborates with the Board and appropriate staff to develop and implement long term seismic, disabled access, and energy efficiency improvement plans
    • Recommends short-term and long—range plans for increasing the BSC's housing capacity to meet community needs
    • Oversees the compliance with lease terms, regular review, and re-negotiation of leases for properties not owned by the BSC
  • Oversees Development and external Communications
    • Consults with the BSC Alumni Association and participates with its activities as requested
    • Pursues other fundraising on behalf of the BSC
    • Oversees external and internal communications to promote the goals of the BSC
  • Acts as the primary public and community relations contact for the BSC and works with outside agencies including banks, universities, lawyers, insurance companies, and government officials to fulfill this role
  • Reports regularly to The Board and its committees, provides continuity and institutional memory, and makes recommendations on policies and procedures
  • Provides support to the Board of Directors and executive officers in their efforts to inform and engage the membership in the democratic processes of decision-making in the BSC
  • In conjunction with the Board of Directors, actively supports leadership development opportunities for co-op members, both in the organization’s operations and within the larger co-operative movement
  • Carries an emergency telephone and arranges for 24/7 emergency response
  • Other duties as required by the Board of Directors or BSC policies

POSITION ESSENTIAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Minimum of 8 years of progressively responsible management and executive experience or a combination of an undergraduate degree in related field and 4 years of progressively responsible management experience
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in affordable housing and/or property management roles
  • Can collaboratively lead multidisciplinary teams with multigenerational stakeholders with a wide range of viewpoints
  • Experience working with college students or young adults preferred
  • A rotating presence is essential between the office, the UC Berkeley campus, and residential co-ops, etc.
  • Promotes and leads diversity, equity, and inclusion
  • Extensive experience working with a nonprofit Board of Directors
  • Extended experience managing mid to senior level professional staff
  • Excellent interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills
  • Ability to prioritize and demonstrate flexibility in a fast-paced environment, and in times of crisis
  • Acquired fluency with BSC policy and practices
  • Ability to delegate to and motivate direct reports
  • Skilled in conflict resolution and problem solving
  • Desire and ability to work in a student-run, democratic, cooperative process
  • Maintains high level of emotional intelligence in all interactions and day to day operations
  • Always demonstrates a cooperative work ethic
  • Promotes a pleasant and fun work environment
  • Leads staff democratically without authoritarianism
  • Working knowledge of:
    • Business, finance, and budgeting
    • Personnel and labor law
    • Project management and contracting processes
    • Asset management


COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS:

For this role, the BSC offers $145-$165k+ annual base salary based on experience plus a robust benefits package that includes medical and dental covered by BSC at 100%, a 403 (b) retirement plan with future employer contribution at 8%, and a generous paid time off program including 14 paid holidays, 17 paid days off to start, and 12 sick days, long and short term disability, a commute benefit option, cost of living increases, and annual raises and bonuses based on performance.
