Scion Executive Search has been retained to conduct a search for the incoming Chief Financial Officer on behalf of our wonderful client, Panthera. They are a distinguished organization devoted exclusively to the conservation of the world’s 40 wild cat species and their landscapes and ecosystem. This is a unique executive opportunity to lead an organization that is dramatically impacting the conservation efforts of the most imperiled wild cat species on a global level.

This tremendous opening is full-time, 100% remote (except for travel), and is open to anywhere in the world!
 
POSITION OVERVIEW
As a key member of the Executive Management Team, the Chief Financial Officer will report to the Chief Executive Officer and assume a strategic role in the overall management of the organization. The CFO will have primary day-to-day responsibility for financial planning, implementing and managing, and all financial-related activities of the organization. This will include direct responsibility for accounting, audit, finance, forecasting, strategic and financial planning, legal property management, banking relationships and deal analysis, and assisting in negotiations and relationships compliance with private and institutional funding. The CFO is responsible for maintaining Board of Directors and Senior Management relations and global compliance requirements.
 
RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Direct and oversee all aspects of the finance and accounting functions of the organization.
  • Provide leadership in developing the continuous evaluation of short and long-term strategic financial objectives.
  • Ensure credibility of financial information by providing timely and accurate analysis of budgets, financial trends, and annual forecasts.
  • Establish Key Performance Indicators for management’s use to identify opportunities and challenges.
  • Provide recommendations to strategically enhance financial performance and business opportunities.
  • Evaluate and advise on the impact of long-range planning, introduction of new programs/strategies, and regulatory actions.
  • Establish and maintain strong relationships with peer senior executives to identify their needs and seek a full range of business solutions.
  • Manage processes for annual financial forecasting, annual budgets and consolidation, and reporting to the Company and the Board.
  • Ensure that effective internal controls are in place and overall compliance with GAAP and applicable federal, state and local regulatory laws and rules for financial and tax reporting.
  • Optimize presentation of financial statements to support the Board, business development, and donor relations.
  • Experience with entity creation in non-U.S. countries to include business filings, banking, and general compliance required to successfully conduct work internationally.
Financial Operations Management
  • Oversee annual budgeting, and the implementation of budgets, so as to monitor progress and present operational metrics both internally and externally.
  • Ensure that finance staff maintains financial record systems in accordance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) and monitor the use of all funds.
  • Oversee the preparation and approval of all financial reporting materials and metrics for funding organizations and Panthera’s Board of Directors; prepare and communicate monthly and annual financial statements.
  • Manage revenue, expense, and cash flow forecasting; direct all financial, project-based, and departmental accounting.
  • Coordinate all audit activities and manage completion of annual audits on a timely basis.
  • Review all formal finance-related procedures, processes, and administration, recommending improvements to the systems in place and managing the systems going forward.
Team Management
  • Develop, lead and manage direct staff, to include managers in finance; guide larger multidisciplinary teams outside of direct reports.
  • Engage other members of the Executive Management Team—Executive Director of Conservation Science, Executive Director of Conservation Action, Chief Scientist, Director, Business Development and Senior Director of Marketing & Communications, Head of Human Resources & Internal Operations—to facilitate cross-department collaboration that ensures that all financial processes and systems positively support Panthera’s evolving strategy, operational delivery, and data collection needs.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
  • Seasoned leader with 10+ years in progressively responsible financial leadership roles.
  • International NGO experience is required.
  • Expertise building accounting and finance systems from the ground up.
  • Demonstrated excellence managing finance (accounting, budgeting, control, and reporting) in a matrixed environment.
  • BS in Accounting and Finance; CPA/CMA and or MBA a plus.
  • Evidence of having worked as a true business partner to the Chief Executive Officer of a global and network-based entity.
  • Skill in examining, developing, reengineering, and recommending financial, policies, procedures, and natural systems design.
  • Strong analytical skills and experience interpreting a strategic vision into an operational model.
  • A collaborative, flexible, and pragmatic style, with a strong service mentality who is a team player committed to lifelong learning.
  • A hands-on manager with integrity and a desire to work in a dynamic, mission-driven environment.
  • Strong commitment to developing team members.
  • Demonstrated commitment to and a passion for Panthera's mission.
  • Experience designing, setting up, and implementing a financial ERP within an organization.
  • Expertise in MS Excel and MS Word; working knowledge of NetSuite and Chrome River, preferable.
