Scion Nonprofit has been engaged to conduct an immediate search for a Nonprofit Accountant on behalf of an amazing nonprofit that partners with its clients to create lasting impacts to combat poverty and injustice. This is a very exciting direct-hire role with a collaborative and passionate team in Portland, Oregon that is ready for immediate hire!
 
This position with our Client requires employees to report to work at a physical location. As a cautionary measure, our Client is asking all employees to be fully vaccinated by the date of hire. Overview:
The Nonprofit Accountant is responsible for maintaining accounting principles, practices and procedures for the Finance Department.  This individual will be tasked with meeting tight deadlines and addressing a multitude of accounting activities, including general ledger preparation, financial reporting, year-end audit preparation and the support of budget and forecast activities. This position works very closely with the Financial Controller as well as Program Managers and is a strong, contributing member of the organization.
 
Responsibilities:

  • Obtain and maintain a thorough understanding of the financial reporting, general ledger structure, and other related system.

  • Review and report for individual grants and contracts for compliance with private, local, state and federal fund requirements.

  • Ensure that monthly and quarterly Bank Compliance and Credit Card activities are performed in a timely and accurate manner.

  • Ensure the timely reporting of all monthly financial information, statements and records including periodic grant reporting.

  • Provide regular support for the Financial Controller with the monthly closing procedures and balance sheet work papers.

  • Provide assistance with the preparation of monthly financial statements as well as custom financial reports.

  • Monitor and analyze department work to develop more efficient procedures and use of resources while maintaining a high level of accuracy.

  • Serve as project leader for software implementation and other special projects.

  • Effectively support, coach, and manage assigned staff.

  • Provide supervision and conduct performance reviews for all assigned staff. Establish work plans and priorities for all assigned staff, performance management, and take corrective action as needed.  Identify, provide and track professional development and training needs for all assigned staff.  Schedule and maintain regular supervision check-ins with all assigned staff.

  • Back up accounts payable and payroll.

  • Assist in program audits as needed.

  • Run general ledger reports and conduct variance analysis.

  • Participate in trainings and coordination meetings as requested by supervisor.

 
Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance or related field or equivalent lived and or worked experience required.

  • 3-5 years’ experience in accounting, finance or related field required.

  • Outstanding leadership skills with 1+ years supervisory experience.

  • Ability to effectively work with programs including Word, Excel, Outlook, Microsoft Teams and PowerPoint and accounting software (Sage Intacct and Concur preferred); 10-key.

  • Experience working with Accounts Payable, Accounts Receivable, and Payroll functions, preferably in a nonprofit setting.

  • Knowledge and understanding of 501(c)(3) non-profit organization accounting requirements.

  • Strong judgment and discretion in dealing with confidential matters.

  • Commitment to the organizational mission and ability to work in partnership with vulnerable populations to achieve lasting solutions to poverty and injustice.

  • Must be able to organize and prioritize work, be proactive, take initiative, follow through, and simultaneously manage multiple priorities to ensure goals are met in a timely manner. High attention to detail required.

  • Ability to work well in team setting, as well as independently; be flexible and adapt well to different dynamics in a fast-paced work environment.
